During the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing and restrictions on movement were imposed to curb the spread of the virus. With significant social restrictions, digital media emerged as a primary source of entertainment and communication for children. A recent study explored the implications of this increased media usage, specifically focusing on Problematic Media Use (PMU) among Indian children and its correlation with behavioral issues and parenting styles during the lockdown.
The findings revealed a concerning trend: as children spent more time on digital platforms, instances of behavioral problems, such as anxiety and aggression, became more pronounced. The study highlighted the varying parenting styles that influenced children's media consumption. Authoritative parenting, characterized by a balance of support and structure, was associated with healthier media habits, while permissive or uninvolved parenting led to higher rates of PMU.
This research underscores the need for parents to engage actively with their children's media use, fostering a more balanced approach to screen time and promoting healthier behavioral outcomes in the wake of unprecedented circumstances.
